What is a celebrant?
A celebrant is a person who officiates at a ceremony to mark a major life transition, such as a naming, coming-of-age, wedding, vow renewal, or funeral.
Funeral celebrants are not (usually) ministering clergy or registrars; but they are people who specialise in creating and leading formal ceremonies. The best are professionals who are experienced, and have been awarded certification in celebrancy and/or allied fields.
Related titles include 'civil celebrant', 'humanist celebrant', 'secular minister', or 'officiant', but the role is fundamentally the same - to write and deliver the perfect ceremony to your specification.
As a dedicated funeral celebrant, I work closely with families and individuals to create a beautiful, and unique bespoke service of farewell for their loved one.
I also offer life celebrant services to lead special occasions and/or help you capture the memories of your loved ones, to give as a gift or treasure for always.

What services do you offer?
Funeral Celebrancy: 'In Loving Memory'
Whichever type of funeral service you require, I can help you.
Life Celebrancy: 'In Living Memory'
I don't just offer funerals, but also ceremonies for those who wish to mark and share the joy of life now. The memory gifting service is where I meet with you and record your life and all your stories, to give to a loved one - you can "make the past a present for the future".
Maybe you'd like a souvenir memory pack to give as a gift from yourself or on behalf of older relatives to pass down to children or grandchildren. You might like a keepsake of a special time e.g. to record the stories of your life, achievements or a major project, for a married couple on a landmark anniversary, or perhaps to record the thoughts of attendees at your special event - your choice!
If you're planning a surprise party, birthday or anniversary, I can present the story there and lead proceedings for you.
Just tell me what you have in mind, and get in touch.
What are the different kinds of ceremonies?
For funeral services, ceremonies tend to fall into one of three types, all of which I can lead for you.
Funeral Celebrancy: 'In Loving Memory'
Whichever type of funeral service you require, I can help you.
- 'At need' services include all types of funerals occurring soon after a passing.
This may be at a:- cemetery
- crematorium
- burial chapel
- natural burial site
- function venue
- village hall
- home
- Memorial 'Celebration of Life' ceremonies are conducted post-committal. They take place at your choice of date/time and venue. There's no need for a funeral director to be in attendance. It is suitable:
- where only a small funeral was possible & you'd like a more fitting celebration (e.g. COVID-19 restrictions)
- where there was a direct cremation,
- to mark the anniversary of a passing
- to formalise a ceremonial farewell, for example:
- tree planting
(perhaps with an ashes circle casting, or a toasting tribute) - ashes release
(such as strewing or raking ashes - subject to the land owner's permission,
or a beach/tide ritual) - other cathartic rite
(Note: due to concerns about wildlife,
balloon & lantern releases are advised against)
- tree planting
- where only a small funeral was possible & you'd like a more fitting celebration (e.g. COVID-19 restrictions)
- 'Pre-need' guidance is where I work with you to design your own funeral ceremony.
You might want to meet to discuss your options, and have me record your wishes in detail, which can be kept safe for later.
Perhaps you'd like me to write a draft service script for you - for either myself or someone else to deliver, when the time comes. If you have a funeral plan, it can be kept with it.
Life Celebrancy: 'In Living Memory'
- Memory Gifting - uplifting 'story telling' celebrations of life for the living

What are the different kinds of ceremonies?
For funeral services, ceremonies tend to fall into one of three types, all of which I can lead for you.
Semi-religious
|
HUMANISTA humanist ceremony is one where the philosophy of secular humanism is explicitly incorporated. This worldview centres on the celebration of 'the one life we have', and ceremonies focus on the life and legacy of the loved one. Humanists have an absence of belief in a deity or afterlife; instead there's a positive belief in human nature: finding meaning, hope and happiness in life. Humanist ceremonies may incorporate:
It should only be called a humanist ceremony if it is led by a humanist though. Many people request these services because of their reputation for being the most personalised. To acknowledge that there will almost always be some people of faith attending, during the Reflection section of the service, you can have an invitation for private contemplation of beliefs at this time if you wish. |
NON-RELIGIOUSA non-religious service is secular: it will be without religious or spiritual content, so there'll be no prayers, hymns, religious rites, or faith readings. It's a safe choice if the deceased was not religious, if they were unsure about their beliefs, or their beliefs were simply not known. It's also an option if there are people attending the ceremony from a range of faith backgrounds. It certainly doesn't mean it is a poor or impoverished choice, though. The service will have carefully chosen, appropriate content to honour your loved one. It is often tribute centred, and can have as much - or little - music, readings, poetry and so on, as you wish. In practise, many secular services today are now similar to humanist ones, such that some people use the terms interchangeably. Don't worry about labels - you will have the ceremony that is right for your loved one, regardless of what it's called. |
A traditional or alternative service?
Once you have decided which belief type you would like reflected, then you can opt for the service format that best suits you - be it a traditional service, or a more 'alternative' one - perhaps ecological, or based on a theme (such as your loved one's favourite colour, a clan tartan, or a pastime - such as sport, music, bingo etc).
If you are using a funeral director, they will have access to a wide range of options for personalisation, such as 'alternative' hearses and coffins, and I'll work with them to ensure your theme is carried through the service.
As well as offering traditional, reflective farewells, and uplifting celebrations of life, I can help if you are looking for somebody to lead an alternative service too - whether you are thinking of a Victorian gothic themed ashes scattering, a magical and gentle woodland faerie farewell, a rainbow hued LGBTQ+ service, or even a rock-blaring, engines-revving biker funeral.
Whichever you choose - traditional or alternative - I'll consult closely with you to ensure you have the perfect goodbye.
BOOKING AVAILABILITY:
Each ceremony is fully bespoke, and as unique as the individual it is created for, so the number of bookings I can take is limited to ensure each is given the time it deserves.
To avoid disappointment it's best to contact me to check my availability as soon as possible, and before the meeting with your funeral director or arranger.
If you are told I'm unavailable, please get in touch with me straight away to double check - I'll help if I can.
If your chosen funeral home's staff don't have my details, or haven't worked with me before, that's not a problem.
I have no personal ties to any particular funeral home; I'm happy to work alongside all good funeral directors, to ensure you get the very best service. Just tell me who they are, and I'll get in touch with them.
You can also book me direct if you prefer.
